Introduction:
"opt-in" vs. "opt-out"
- "opt-in" is like a traditional mailing list: users only get traffic from it if they explicitly sign up.
- "opt-out" is spamming, since it asks recipients to take explicit action to be removed from a mailing list.
- Since spammers resell years-old mailing lists on CDROMS, each new buyer will offer you a chance to be removed from their mailing list.
- Processing "remove" requests is difficult, time consuming, and unprofitable--therefore most spammers will not honour them anyway.
